WHILE ALSO HOLDING A BLOWDRYER

As hairdressers, this is one of the main things we hear! “I love it when you style my hair, but I can never get it to do that at home”. We love a voluminous round brush blow-dry as much as the next gal and with these tips, achieving that look at home will be much more achievable!

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Let’s get REAL... Your stylist has spent years studying and endlessly practicing this craft, the craft of the blow-dry. So it will go without saying, they make it look easy. Hop on the home hair styling wagon with an open mind, a little patience and expect it may take a few tries for you to get the hang of it!

THE RIGHT TOOLS

The right tools are KEY to recreating that salon blowout look. Let’s hit the bases; blowdryer, you want to make sure your blowdryer has a nozzle so you can control the direction the air is flowing. Bonus points for a blowdryer that has speed and heat control or a cool option (should we do a whole post about what to look for in a blowdryer?). The brush! Let’s break down some brush basics to make sure you’re using the correct one for your needs. Round brushes often come in two material options, ceramic with nylon bristles or wooden with natural boar bristles. Materials choice is really one of preference. From our experience, we’ve found there are pros to each.

A stylist’s choice at Jón Alan Salons is the Ergo Ionic Ceramic Round Brushes, it delivers a fast and longer lasting shine for all hair types. The long barrel and handle make it easy to reach every part of your style (even the back). Heat resistant nylon bristles infused with tourmaline provide shine and humidity resistance.

The collection comes in 5 different sizes to meet all your needs. SHOP ERGO IONIC HERE.

Rule of thumb when it comes to choosing your brush size is the smaller the brush, the MORE curl, and the larger the brush, the more straight. You also want to take into consideration the length of your hair. If your hair is below your shoulders, you could safely choose 2 inches or larger for your brush, while if your hair is above your shoulders and want to see a wave, 2 inches or smaller could work well. Ask your stylist which round brush is right for you!

On the other side, we are also big fans of the Ibiza Brushes, these are made from the finest eco-friendly materials, flexible yet resilient cork from the Mediterranean, plus a secret blend of natural boar and heat-resistant carbon fiber bristles from Spain that perform like no other boar bristles can. No getting stuck. No ripping. No breakage. Just totally controlled “GripSlip technology”, making it easier for you to achieve healthy, shiny, beautiful hair.

Let’s take a closer look at these three famous brushes.

G4 65mm - For volume, ideal for the crown of the head and medium to long hair. Swirled bristles, ideal for coarse and frizzy hair. Swirled sparse bristles allow coarse hair to get wrapped around the bristles easier than with uniform bristles. Swirled bristles are also great for spinning the brush to create texture, waves and smoothness. The G series mixes natural boar bristle with a unique carbon fiber heat resistant nylon.

Style

Make sure your hair is neatly combed and take clean sections no wider than the diameter of your brush. If you are looking for a more smooth, straight or sleek look, apply the blowdryer air flow to your hair as you glide the brush down the length of your hair. Repeating this until dry will give ultimate shine and smoothness. If you’re after a more wavy or curly vibe, try rolling the round brush up your hair, then applying heat for 5-10 seconds, then (this bit is important) let it cool in the shape of the brush before taking it out. Repeating until dry will give maximum curl and bounce.
