Do's and Don'ts of Home Skincare
Looking after your skin is important, it is after all the largest organ of our body. If cared for right, we can prevent acne, wrinkles, dryness and maintain an overall glow of vivacious health!
Knowing where to start (or restart) a skin care routine can be intimidating. In this article we break down the Do’s and Don’ts of an at home routine, and what should be left to the professionals. Your home and professional care routine should work hand in hand to compliment each other for best results. Similarly as you brush your teeth morning and evening at home and schedule regular dental cleanings and maintenance. One would not be as effective without the other.
DO - CLEANSE TONE & MOISTURIZE
This fundamental skin care ritual is the foundation for the rest of your care. It is important to make this a part of your practice both morning and night. Emma Childress, expert esthetician says, “Your skin encounters different environmental pollution through the day, so cleansing, toning and moisturizing just in the morning is not enough. Your body works the hardest when you sleep, so be sure you’re practicing this routine before bed as well!”
DON’T - CHEMICAL PEEL
Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin’s surface to reduce the appearance of blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture and tone, improve radiance and restore the skin health. There are lots of factors that come into play with a chemical peel including type, strength, and timing of the peel based on your skin’s needs. This is a treatment we leave to the professionals! Home peels could burn your skin, doing more damage than good. Your skin skin care professional will work with you to determine a chemical peel treatment plan customized to your needs, and may recommend a pre and post-treatment regimen to help prime and protect your skin.
Do - Serum
Do Do Do! By layering a serum under your moisturizer for a custom boost you can target your skin's needs such as dryness or tendency for acne. Emma Childress says, “always layer your skincare product from thinnest to thickest, and give enough time for your skin to absorb the serum before applying moisturizer!” An esthetician favorite we turn to for improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brighter complexion is Skinceuticals C E Ferulic.
Don't - Dermaplaning
OMG! Big Don’t! Think of your skin like a microscopic terrain of mountains. If your skin is not held taut during dermaplaning, you're more at risk of cutting your face. A professional has the tools and precision required for effective dermaplaning treatment. For those who may not know, dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method that requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently shave the top layer of the skin. Leave this one to the professionals, but incorporating it into your spa regime has many benefits and will allow your home care routine to be even more effective.
Do - Retinol
Emma tells us that “Retinol boosts our cell turnover rate, improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, skin texture, and blemishes with minimum sensitization. So, it basically does everything. Just remember to discontinue use 72 hours before having your eyebrows waxed!” Ensuring we choose a high quality retinol is important, we turn to Skinceuticals for their quality ingredients and effectiveness. Retinol is available in three different strengths .03, .05, and 1.0. Always a good idea to work your way up to the stronger formulas especially if you tend to be sensitive. Your JA esthetician’s will help determine where to start.
Don't - Derma Rollers
The idea behind tiny puncture wounds in the skin is that it stimulates the body’s healing process. Blood flow is increased to the area and the formation of new collagen and elastin is developed, resulting in stronger, healthier skin with reduced lines and wrinkles, acne marks, and other blemishes. “Without proper sterilization, derma rollers can harbor harmful bacteria, causing infections. Anything that involves needles should be carried out by a professional in a clean & sterile environment. Derma rollers lack the precision that comes from a professional microneedling device, which can cause way more harm than good. Most needles on derma rollers are way too long for certain areas of the face. It's all around just a bad idea.” We choose the only FDA approved Microneedling device on the market called SkinPen. This advanced treatment performed by a professional makes all the difference in receiving the immense benefits. It is recommended you commit to at least three treatments to see results. Do - Décolleté
In today’s world we all spend a lot of time looking down at our phones and the result of that is Tech Neck. Not to worry, SkinCeuticals neck repair to the rescue. “Whenever you're washing your face, just remember to bring your cleanser & moisturizer down to your neck & chest. It doesn't have to be complicated! But if you want to get a little more advanced, Tripeptide-R Neck Repair from Skinceauticals is a fantastic product to have on hand!” So include your décolleté in part of your skincare routine for long term benefits.
